Ocean chain reaction may have helped trigger Earth's ice ages
University of St Andrews scientists suggest that growing Northern Hemisphere ice sheets cooled Atlantic waters that later flowed south towards Antarctica, changing ocean circulation and sea ice there. Those Southern Ocean changes helped draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, a key driver of ice ages. The study, in the Journal of Climate, links processes at opposite poles.
