MIT origami method turns folded aluminium into load-bearing structures

MIT engineers have devised an origami-inspired construction method that folds flat aluminium panels into lightweight, rigid structures able to carry loads without interior columns. They built a room-sized structure, displayed as a sculpture in a public library atrium. Lab simulations showed greater stiffness while using roughly two-thirds as much material, and the approach could simplify assembly.
