Toyota readies new 1.5-litre hybrid engine promising over 85mpg

Toyota is developing a new 1.5-litre petrol engine designed from the start for hybrid use, which could return over 85mpg. It will replace the current 1.8-litre four-cylinder and 1.3-litre three-cylinder units and come in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. Paired with a redesigned hybrid module, it will suit full hybrids, plug-in hybrids and potentially range-extenders.
