Magma deep inside Earth hides extra oxygen, study finds

Scientists have found that molten rock deep inside Earth can store far more oxygen than previously thought, absorbing extra oxygen beyond its normal chemical needs. Using high-pressure experiments and simulations, the HPSTAR-led team suggests ancient volcanic eruptions may have helped create Earth's oxygen-rich atmosphere. The findings, published in National Science Review, could inform searches for life elsewhere.
