CoastSnap: citizens' phone photos help scientists track changing shorelines
The CoastSnap project, launched in Australia in 2017, lets beach visitors help monitor coastlines using just a camera phone and an app. Phones rest in a fixed cradle so each photo is taken from the same angle; software converts images into a bird's-eye view and maps the shoreline. There are now over 200 stations in 21 countries, the world's largest coordinated land-based coastal monitoring programme.
