Over 107,000 species traded worldwide, double earlier estimates

A University of Melbourne-led study in Science Advances finds 107,356 species of plants, animals and fungi are used and traded globally, more than double the previous estimate of about 50,000. Lead researcher Alice Hughes said most trade is legal, from timber to ornamental fish, yet data gaps mean the risk to most species remains unknown.
