Senior faculty vacancies soar in India's top institutions

In India's IITs, NITs, IIMs, IISERs and central universities, faculty vacancies rise sharply with seniority, an analysis notes. Citing a Parliamentary Standing Committee report, it says that of 18,940 sanctioned posts, 17.97% of assistant professor posts, 38.28% of associate professor posts and 56.18% of professor posts were vacant as of January 2025, hurting doctoral supervision, mentoring and research leadership.
