TRAI wants licences for free internet TV channels on smart TVs

TRAI has recommended that apps streaming free, ad-supported TV channels over the internet should need a government licence, as cable and DTH operators do. The proposal, sent to the I&B Ministry on Monday, covers services like those preinstalled on smart TVs. The ministry had sought views in December 2025 after cable operators complained such services operated without a licence.
