Gabon restores social media access after eight-month ban

Gabon has lifted a ban on social media that was imposed eight months ago and drew widespread criticism. The High Communication Authority announced the U-turn on Saturday in a televised statement. The ban was introduced on 17 February, with the regulator saying online content was fuelling conflict and deepening divisions, while the opposition condemned it as an abuse of power.
