Kashmir's traditional rice carries cold-tolerance genes, study finds
Traditional rice varieties grown in Kashmir carry cold-tolerance and other locally adapted genes that modern varieties have partly lost, a SKUAST-Kashmir study in The Plant Genome reports. Researchers sequenced 142 local samples and compared them with a global panel of 3,010. The varieties turned out to be closely related to rice from the Korean Peninsula and Northeast China, and may help crops face climate stress.
