Wikimedia urges courts to protect AI training but not copying of articles

The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, has filed an amicus brief in lawsuits brought by publishers including The New York Times against OpenAI and Microsoft, backing neither side. It argues training AI models on copyrighted work should be fair use, but chatbots regurgitating that work should not, warning an overly simple ruling could harm Wikipedians or the open web.
