Venice lagoon was once dry land stretching 30 miles inland, study finds
Researchers led by Samuele Ongaro of the University of Southampton found that today's Venice lagoon was dry land extending more than 30 miles from the coast about 10,000 years ago. Combining seismic data and sediment cores, they showed sea levels rose in bursts of up to 25mm a year, reshaping the northern Adriatic and forcing hunter-gatherers to adapt.
