Salmon spawn days after California river restoration
Crews restoring a damaged stretch of California's Lower Tuolumne River added over 24,000 cubic yards of gravel, 49 trees and 80 boulders, creating 4.78 acres of habitat. Scientists recorded Chinook salmon spawning on the new riffles within days of completion. Floods in 1997, 2011 and 2017 had destroyed gravel beds the fish need to reproduce.
