Rare short-necked oil beetle found breeding in Wales after 60 years

The short-necked oil beetle, feared extinct in Wales, has been found in Pembrokeshire after 60 years, with evidence suggesting it is breeding again. Named for its stubby shape, it releases an oily yellow-orange liquid from its knee joints when alarmed. Listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, its larvae hitch rides to solitary bees' nests to feed on pollen.
