2024 solar storm produced super-fast electrons inside Earth's 'barrier'
Earth is surrounded by an invisible barrier once thought to keep highly energetic electrons away from the planet. But during a 2024 solar storm, Japan's Arase space probe detected such electrons well inside it. Research led by Nagoya University now suggests these ultrarelativistic electrons were accelerated locally, rather than leaking in from the outer radiation belts.
