Physicist builds tiny lab universe where time emerges without a clock
University of Birmingham physicist Giovanni Barontini has built a miniature universe in the lab using about 24,000 ultracold atoms. The isolated quantum system repeatedly expands and contracts, mimicking a Big Bang and a possible Big Crunch. The experiment showed time can be tracked from changes inside the system itself, without an external clock. The work appears in Physical Review Research.
