Overtraining without rest may disrupt brain dopamine, study finds
Exhaustive exercise without adequate rest alters dopamine regulation in the hippocampus, a brain region linked to memory and emotions, according to a study in the journal Neuroscience. Brazilian researchers found dopamine stayed elevated in overtrained mice when they should have been resting. If confirmed in humans, it may help explain anxiety, insomnia and chronic fatigue in overtrained athletes.
