Wildlife trade involves twice as many species as thought, study finds
More than 100,000 plant and animal species are traded globally, more than twice previous estimates, according to a study in Science Advances. The trade spans smuggling, ornaments, fisheries, timber and fashion, and the online exotic pet boom is poorly tracked. Lead author Alice Hughes of the University of Melbourne warned that current assessments badly underestimate modern trade, posing major risks to species.
