Most IITs fall far short of UGC norm on student counsellors, RTI shows
RTI replies show several IITs have far fewer mental health counsellors than the UGC's recommended one per 500 students. IIT Kharagpur has one counsellor for every 1,136 students, IIT Roorkee one per 1,317, and IIT (BHU) Varanasi one per 4,750. Only IIT Ropar met the norm. The data comes amid rising student suicides over five years.
