India to count gig workers separately in labour survey from 2027

From January 2027, the Periodic Labour Force Survey will add a separate sampling category for digital platform workers, MoSPI said, after the current method failed to capture enough of them. A new question will identify households where someone did platform work, in both rural and urban areas. NITI Aayog has projected India's gig workforce could reach 2.35 crore by FY30.
