US permanently lost nearly 10 million acres of forest in 28 years
New research shows the US permanently lost almost 10 million acres of forest to development and cropland between 1990 and 2017, up to 350,000 acres a year, roughly a football field every two minutes. The US Forest Monitor, built by Clark University for the Open Space Institute, counts only land that stayed non-forest for at least five years.
