Enzyme helps infant gut bacteria feed on breast milk sugars

University of Birmingham-led researchers found that PNGaseA, an enzyme usually linked to other processes in plants and animals, lets some Bifidobacterium species unlock sugars attached to short protein chains in breast milk. These nutrients are absent from infant formula. Published in Nature Communications, the work could guide better formulas and prebiotics for babies without access to breast milk.
