Cornell's engineered tomatoes turn red-purple to warn of low nitrogen
Cornell University scientists have engineered tomato plants, called RedAlert, that produce betanin, the red-purple pigment in beets, when nitrogen runs low, giving farmers a visible signal to add fertiliser. The plants are now being tested in field conditions at Cornell's Musgrave Research Farm. They are not meant for food, but could grow beside crops as living sensors.
