Flesh-eating screwworm spreads to Arizona, now attacking US pets
The New World screwworm infestation has spread to Arizona, joining New Mexico and Texas, with 74 animal cases recorded in the US since the flies returned in June. The parasites lay eggs in wounds, and their larvae bore into living flesh, sometimes fatally. The pest was eliminated from the US in the 1960s by releasing sterile male flies.
