World Bank: Extreme poverty in India fell to 2.6% by 2023
India has made remarkable progress in cutting poverty, the World Bank said. Between 2011 and 2023, extreme poverty fell from 27.1% to 2.6%, while the share below the $4.20-a-day line dropped from 57.7% to 16.1%, lifting about 496 million people out. Rising consumption, employment and social transfers drove the gains. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman welcomed the findings.
