Can a heart stent get blocked again? A cardiac surgeon explains
A heart stent can become blocked again, though modern stents have reduced the risk, says Mumbai cardiac surgeon Dr Bipeenchandra Bhamre. Re-narrowing inside the stent, called restenosis, occurs in about 5–10% of patients. A blood clot can also form inside the stent and cause sudden blockage, while fatty deposits may create new blockages elsewhere in the arteries.
