Snakebites may kill up to 513,000 people a year, study finds

A new global study estimates venomous snakebites kill between 274,000 and 513,000 people every year, far more than previously thought. Up to 7 million people may be envenomed annually, leaving over 800,000 with long-term disabilities. Using data from 79 countries, researchers found sub-Saharan Africa bears the heaviest toll, complicating the WHO goal of halving deaths by 2030.
