Northern Ireland police to stop most mental health welfare checks
From November, the Police Service of Northern Ireland will no longer carry out concern-for-welfare checks unless there is a risk to life, risk of harm or a crime involved. Police handle about 30,000 mental health calls a year. Under the Right Care Right Person policy, 999 calls will be assessed and may be passed to other emergency services or health and social care staff.
