Sphinx rock fossils reveal ancient gharial-like crocodile
Scientists have identified a new extinct crocodile, Herugavialis cairensis, that resembled India's gharial and lived about 45 million years ago. It was found by re-examining fossils unearthed in Egypt nearly a century ago from the Mokattam Formation, the same rocks used to build the Great Sphinx and pyramids. Fittingly, its well-preserved skull is missing its snout tip.
