Giant iceberg A-81 drifts to South Georgia after leaving Antarctica
Iceberg A-81, roughly 1,550 square kilometres in size, has reached the remote South Atlantic island of South Georgia, about 2,300 km from the Brunt Ice Shelf it broke away from in January 2023. After more than three years in the Weddell Sea, it reached the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula by May 2026. NASA satellite imagery shows it slowing along the island's underwater shelf.
