Six in ten Indian schoolchildren travel over 1 km to school, survey finds
India's first National Household Travel Survey, conducted by the NSO, shows 60.6% of children aged 6 to 14 travel more than a kilometre to school. RTE rules require schools within 1 km for Classes 1 to 5 and 3 km for Classes 6 to 8. The findings point to gaps in neighbourhood schooling, especially in villages lacking secondary schools.
