MIT's Paris Smaragdis is teaching machines to understand sound

MIT professor Paris Smaragdis, who began with classical guitar and electronic music, now develops AI systems that interpret sound and separate overlapping audio sources. His work has ranged from audio analysis to restoring archival Beatles recordings for the Emmy-winning series The Beatles: Get Back. He aims to make AI a creative aid for musicians, not a replacement.
