Tobacco use falls in India and US, but rural, poor still hit hardest
A study comparing India and the US finds tobacco use is declining overall, yet disadvantaged and rural groups remain disproportionately affected. In India, adult tobacco use fell from 34.6% in 2009-10 to 28.6% in 2016-17, but smokeless tobacco stayed at 21.4%. Bidis and chewing products dominate in India, while cigarettes and e-cigarettes worry the US.
