Experimental gene therapy silences hepatitis B virus DNA

An experimental therapy named CRMA-1001 takes a new approach to hepatitis B: instead of attacking the virus directly, it silences the viral DNA inside infected liver cells. Scientists see this as promising because current treatments rarely eliminate that DNA, which lets the virus rebound. The approach builds on chemical tagging of DNA with methyl groups, first made in a lab in 1904.
