Tibetan ice may be over 128,000 years old, scientists find
Ice cores from the Guliya ice cap in northwestern Tibet may preserve a climate record more than 128,000 years old, extending the region's known glacial record by over 100,000 years. Cores drilled in 1992 and 2015 showed strikingly similar oxygen isotope patterns, said lead author Lonnie Thompson of Ohio State University, showing mountain ice survived since the last ice age.
