Ultracold atoms mimic creation of matter-antimatter pairs
Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have used ultracold rubidium atoms trapped in a laser-made chain to simulate the Schwinger effect, in which a strong electric field creates particle-antiparticle pairs from a vacuum. The process has never been directly observed. The team found fewer pairs formed when simulated particles were heavier. The work appears in Physical Review Letters.
