Scientists film glowing electrical sparks on tree leaves during storms
Researchers have directly observed corona discharges glowing on tree leaves during thunderstorms, confirming a phenomenon suspected for over 70 years. Using an ultraviolet camera in a modified vehicle in North Carolina, they recorded 859 signals on a sweetgum tree and 93 on a loblolly pine. The study suggests the discharges may affect atmospheric chemistry and damage leaf tips.
