Scientists find hidden reason muscles weaken with age
Researchers have found that ageing muscles shift towards slow-twitch fibres as a defence mechanism that sacrifices strength to protect cells from damage, even as their mitochondria become less efficient. The study focused on cardiolipin, a fat molecule in mitochondria. In mice, partially restoring it reversed signs of muscle wasting and prevented premature death, raising hopes for new treatments.
