How Gaganyaan's parachute system will slow astronauts for a safe landing
Returning spacecraft rely mainly on atmospheric drag to shed speed, but parachutes are needed near the end to slow them enough for a gentle landing on land or sea. Gaganyaan's crew module uses two drogue chutes fired out by mortars, followed by three main chutes pulled out by mortar-ejected pilot chutes, to reduce its velocity to safe limits.
