France reports world's first human case of livestock Shamonda virus

French health authorities say the Shamonda virus, which usually infects livestock, has been detected in a human for the first time, in a severely immunocompromised patient who died this month. The patient likely caught it from a midge bite in eastern France. Officials found no risk to the general public. The virus was first detected in Europe in July.
